Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

Depending on the type of cancer you have, the radiation oncologist may prescribe a radiation treatment method called IMRT. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy or IMRT uses computer generated images to plan and then deliver even more tightly focused radiation beams to cancerous tumors than has previously been possible. With this capability, we can deliver a precise radiation dose that conforms to the shape of the tumor, while significantly reducing the amount of radiation to surrounding healthy tissues. Consequently, the technique can increase the rate of tumor control while significantly reducing adverse side effects.

Side Effects:

The side effects you have will depend on the length of treatment, the levels of radiation you receive, and the part of the body being treated. Before beginning your treatment, your radiation oncologist will review possible side effects with you. Most side effects are temporary and there are many ways to reduce the discomfort they may cause. During the first few days of treatment, a nurse will review ways to manage specific side effects. The most common side effects that occur with radiation therapy are skin reactions, fatigue and nutritional concerns.
