What is Radiation Therapy?

Radiation therapy is one method to treat cancer. By directing carefully measured amounts of radiation to cancerous cells (tumor), the cancer cells can be destroyed or lose their ability to grow and divide. Radiation therapy is effective against many types of cancers. About half of all patients with cancer are treated with radiation therapy. Radiation therapy may also be used to treat benign (non- cancerous) conditions.

Radiation therapy (also called radiotherapy, X-ray therapy or irradiation) may be used to:

  • Destroy tumors and stop the spread of cancer without surgery

  • Shrink tumors before surgery
  • Reduce the risk of tumor re-growth after surgery
  • Relieve pain caused by the tumor pressing on organs

Your radiation therapy program is designed specifically for you. Therefore, your treatment may be different from that of other patients with the same type of cancer.

Meeting with your radiation oncologist will be your first step in therapy. During the first visit, your radiation oncologist will explain why you need radiation therapy and tell you about other alternatives. He will discuss the goals and side effects of treatment and what you can expect during treatment.

Please feel free to ask you radiation oncologist and radiation therapy team any question you have during your radiation therapy.
