Dosimetrist

Tri-State Regional Cancer Center - Certified Medical Dosimetrists

Raymond C. Lawson, RT (R.T.), CMD
Mary A. Robertson, RT (R.T.), CMD

The medical dosimetrist is professionally engaged in the interfaces between the anatomical and physiological requirements of patient treatment prescribed by the radiation oncologist and the physical science requirements specified by the medical physicist. Therefore, the medical dosimetrist may be utilized elastically where design, immobilization and simulation take place. Their skills are then used to adapt the art of treatment planning to treatment delivery procedures, which are carried out mainly by the radiation therapists.

The dosimetrist occupies a unique specialist position, responsible for the efficient translation of these clinical and physical requirements into a coherent individually planned course of radiation for the cancer patient. The medical dosimetrist coordinates the necessary procedures to initiate the planning process, although at many times they are involved in simulation procedures.  Utilizing the data acquired during the planning process, such as PET, CT and MRI, the dosimetrist generates 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional radiation treatment plans following the dose prescription specifications from the radiation oncologist.  The final plan is routinely reviewed and approved by the radiation oncologist prior to treatment.  Under the direction of a medical physicist, the dosimetrist has been trained to calculate and generate radiation dose distributions in accordance with the treatment plan developed by the radiation oncologist.

Medical dosimetrists use their trained knowledge of general physics, anatomy and radiobiology to design optimal treatments that apply an effective dose to the targeted area while sparing normal tissue that surrounds it.  Often found, medical dosimetrists are typically, previously employed therapeutic radiologic technologists who advanced through their profession. Our medical dosimetrists have achieved the qualifications stated below. To contact a medical dosimetrist, please click on the link below.
